Brown Scores Twice as Men's Soccer Blasts McDaniel 5-0

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Junior midfielder Pat Brown (Far Hills, N.J./Ridge) scored two goals and freshman midfielder Ryan Peiffer (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) assisted two others to lead Gettysburg to a 5-0 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Wednesday night.

With the win, Gettysburg improves to 10-5-1 overall and 5-3-0 in CC play, and the Bullets remain alive for a CC playoff berth. Gettysburg controls its playoff destiny. A win on Saturday against Dickinson would clinch the No. 3 seed in the tournament and a tie would clinch a playoff berth. With the loss, McDaniel falls to 8-9-0 overall and 3-5-0 in conference play. The defeat eliminated the Green Terror from the CC playoff picture.

Gettysburg jumped on the scoreboard at 29:00 to take a 1-0 lead. Peiffer, running down the left side of the field, centered the ball to junior forward Brad Tabor (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) at the top of the box. Tabor got past one defender and struck the ball into the goal for the lead. Right before the end of the first half, Peiffer passed the ball to freshman midfielder Geoff Menge (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West). Menge put the Bullets' ahead 2-0 with his strike.

Five minutes in the second half, Menge lofted a ball from the midfield to Brown who broke past McDaniel's line of defense. He had a one-on-one with goalkeeper Christian Maisel, and Brown drilled the ball into the left side of the goal. Brown tallied his second goal at 61:07. Junior forward Jesse Gemberling-Johnson (Wyndmoor, Pa./Christopher Dock) centered a ball from the right corner, and a streaking Brown beat the McDaniel defender to the spot and popped the ball just inside the right goal post.

The Bullets added a late goal in the 87th minute. Sophomore midfielder Kevin Wagner (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) lofted the ball into the box from the left corner, and sophomore forward Chris Bayon (Langhorne, Pa./Lawrenceville School [N.J.]) struck the ball into the net to set the game's final outcome at 5-0. The assist was Wagner's first collegiate point.

Sophomore goalkeeper Adam Finkel (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) made six saves in 71:27 of play, and junior goalkeeper Matt Langston (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) played the remainder of the game to combine for the shutout. Maisel made five saves in the loss.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at Dickinson for a crucial Centennial Conference matchup that will impact the conference's playoff picture. Game time is 1 p.m.
